Grok Image 2: Verified Release Guide
A sourced guide to the Grok Image 2 release, editing controls, reference limits, smart resize, Arena claims, and API availability.

Grok Image 2: what xAI actually released
xAI released Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7, 2026. “Grok Image 2” is the common search phrase used throughout this guide. The model is generally available as the new Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok iOS and Android apps.
The release is about usable creative work rather than a new chat model. xAI highlights instruction following, typography and layout planning, sharper small text, and preservation of supplied content across generations and edits.
Editing controls
The consumer product adds four concrete editing tools:
- A magic wand for changing a pointed region while leaving the rest of the image intact.
- Segmentation for selecting an exact area or object.
- Background removal with transparent output.
- Multi-reference editing with up to five input images in one generation.
These are consumer-product limits. The current Grok Imagine API documentation describes up to three reference images. This site therefore limits its API workspace to three uploads.
Smart resize ratios
xAI demonstrates nine resize targets: 1:2, 9:16, 2:3, 3:4, 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 2:1. Smart resize fills the added frame instead of applying only a crop. Check subject geometry and newly generated background areas in every resized version.
Benchmark claim, with its date
xAI reports that the model ranked second in both the Text-to-Image Arena and Image Edit Arena by overall Elo on August 7, 2026. This is a dated leaderboard snapshot, not a permanent rank. Re-check the live leaderboards before making a current comparison.
API status
The Image 2.0 release page says API access is coming soon. No public Grok Image 2 API model identifier is listed at launch.
The generator on grokimage2.app uses the existing, documented grok-imagine-image-quality and grok-imagine-image endpoints. It does not label those outputs as Image 2 results. The current API supports text-to-image generation, natural-language editing, batch output, aspect-ratio control, and 1K or 2K resolution depending on the selected model.
